Weekly
Visual inspection of any central control unit to check that emergency lighting system is in operation.
Monthly
If an automatic system. The results of the automated tests should be recorded.
For manual Systems :
A: Each luminaire needs to be tested. This is usually by means of a test key switch which interrupts the power supply to the light fitting and simulates a power failure. This only needs to be done to check that the lamps are working and does not need to drain the batteries.
B: Upon completion of the test and the power restored the LED indicator lights come on to indicate that the fittings are receiving a charge to the batteries.
C: For central supplied systems with remote battery or generators checks are made on the standby supplies as recommended by the manufacturer.
D: The test results are recorded in the system log book.
Annually
If an automatic system. The results of the automated tests should be recorded.
For manual Systems:
A: Each luminaire needs to be tested. This is usually by means of a test key switch which interrupts the power supply to the light fitting and simulates a power failure. This should be for the full rated duration of the luminaire
B: Upon completion of the test and the power restored the LED indicator lights come on to indicate that the fittings are receiving a charge to the batteries.
C: For central supplied systems correct operation of the system monitors are checked
D: For central supplied systems with remote battery or generators checks are made on the standby supplies as recommended by the manufacturer.
E: Generator sets are to meet the requirements of ISO 8528-12
F: The test results are recorded in the system log book
G: A certificate is supplied to the person ordering the work/or to the person responsible for the safety systems of the premises

The British standard for emergency lighting systems routine inspection and testing is
BS 5266-8 2004 7.1. This sets the standard as below:
