SOME OF THE POOR EXAMPLES OF DANGEROUS AND SUB STANDARD WIRING THAT WE HAVE FOUND RECENTLY

This was installed in a new house in Heathfield. Three phase 415v board adapted for single phase 230v use by means of a door hinge.
All main switching has been removed. Supply cables are undersized and where joined to meter tails exposed live parts had been left.
Very hot and very dangerous!

Rented flat in Tunbridge Wells

Shower switch that went Bang !!

Caused by back box being too shallow. Cables being pressed together and getting too hot.

Burnt consumer unit in Sevenoaks
Caused by a loose connection. Believe it or not most electrical fires are caused by the neutral conductor and not the live. The house holder didn’t like the fishy smell in the cupboard so put an air freshener in.

Bungalow in Eastbourne.
Subaru Impreza didn’t quite make the bend!
Luckily occupant of house had just gone outside to water garden when car crashed through lounge wall.

Tunbridge Wells town house.
Gas fitters have connected in new gas pipes leaving earth cable still connected to original disconnected pipe. I suspect not really Gas Safe engineers.

This little nasty found in a boiler cupboard in Southborough is feeding central heating, washing machine, cooker hood and an electric hob. All the wiring in the house is from 1957 and probably about to catch light very soon.
Time to re-wire.

Pembury kitchen lights.
No junction box so wrap it in tin foil, and also run the washing machine from it as well.

Langton Green. House Re-wire.
Electricity became popular in homes between 1920s and 30s. This installation is probably the original fuse boxes from that time. Fabric covered cables have now rotted away and leave a real danger.

High Brooms, Tunbridge Wells. Fuseboard upgrade needed.

1970’s fuse board with wooden back box and undersized earthing. Simple to upgrade with new consumer unit and replacement earth cables.

Rental property in Tunbridge Wells. Socket installed under sink had suffered water damage. Only when electrics finally blew was leak reported.

Broken double socket in lounge of same house. Hazardous at the best of times but with small children an accident waiting to happen.

Tunbridge wells broken and burnt socket in hand car wash. Water everywhere and wet hands. Not a good mix

Pantiles Tunbridge Wells. Broken light switch in very dark cupboard.

Sevenoaks shop basement. Fuse boards in urgent need of attention.
This trio was discovered in the basement of a small Sevenoaks shop. Definitely in need of some remedial work.

Tunbridge Wells Victorian House with rubber cables.
Simple fault call out revealed dimmer switch to be faulty. It also showed that one fuse board had been changed but that much of the wiring from 1950s was still in place.
The house had been redecorated and refurbished by the previous owners but leaving this hidden can of worms below the surface. As rubber cable is a serious fire risk the house will now have to partly re-wired.
